There are two engines available from launch, a 1.5 litre SKYACTIV petrol and a 1.5 litre SKYACTIV diesel. The petrol option has three outputs of 75PS, 90PS and 115PS while the diesel only has a 105PS output to choose from.

Mazda has offered five trim levels on the new 2 - SE, SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport and Sport Nav. All new Mazda 2's come with dynamic stability control, traction control, electronic brake force distribution and hill hold assist.

The base SE trim has daytime running lights and air conditioning, while the SE-L grade adds 15-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth, cruise control and electric rear windows. The Sport grade gains 16inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, climate control and rear parking sensors. Nav grades share the same spec as their named counterparts but add Satellite navigation to the standard features.

Boot size has been increased over it's predecessor, allowing 280 litres of space with the rear seats in place and 960 litres with the seats folded. This is still smaller than it's closest competitor, the Ford Fiesta, but not by much.

It's the 1.5 litre SKYACTIV diesel engine that will appeal to company car drivers in particular, with it's 14% company car tax band, and it offers 83.1 MPG on the combined cycle and only 89g/km of CO2 emissions.
