Based on a new platform, the i20 is longer, lower, wider and has a longer wheelbase than its predecessor (45mm longer) which allows for a much larger cabin area inside, especially in the back. Boot size is 326 litres in 'S' guise, but this is reduced for the higher specification models to 301 litres which have a movable boot floor.

There are five engine variants at launch: A 1.2-litre petrol engine with 75PS and 84PS outputs and a 1.4-litre with 100PS output for the petrols. For the diesels, there is a 1.1-litre CRDi with 75PS output and a 1.4-litre CRDi with 90PS output, although the 1.1-litre CRDi engine is not available on the higher trimmed levels.

The 1.1-litre CRDi diesel engine is available with the economical S Blue variant, that adds Hyundai's Intelligent Stop and Go (ISG) system and low-rolling resistance tyres, allowing for CO2 emissions of only 84g/km, an attractive option for company car drivers.

Along with five engine variants, Hyundai have made 4 trim levels available for the new i20 too. There's the entry level "S" trim, (it also comes with Air conditioning for one variant, labelled as "S Air"), the eco-version mentioned above as "S Blue", an SE grade, a Premium grade and top-of-the-range Premium SE grade.

If you're after an automatic, there are versions in the SE trim and above, but only on the 1.4-litre with 100PS output. It comes with a price premium of £900 over the manual version.

The basic S grade comes with features such as electric front windows, remote central locking, tinted windows and RDS radio with USB. The SE grade, expected to be the best-seller, comes with 16inch alloy wheels, voice activated bluetooth, cruise control with speed limiter, front fog lights, lane departure warning system, rear electric windows and reversing sensors.

The premium model gains a smartphone docking station, automatic dimming rear view mirror, automatic headlights and wipers, climate control, cornering lights, LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights, projection headlamps and privacy glass. The top-of-the-range Premium SE grade gains even more, with features included such as front parking sensors, heated front seats, heated steering wheel and an opening panoramic glass sunroof.

All models come with safety features including items such as 6 airbags, hill start assist control, ABS, ESP, VSM, emergency stop signal and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

An optional in-built touch screen navigation system is available as a factory fit option and also comes with a rear-view camera.
