• Tesla held a ‘Battery Day’ event this week, in which more details about the eagerly awaited Model S Plaid were revealed.

    Due to go into production a­t the end of 2021, this flagship Model S will feature Tesla’s latest in-house batteries, which were also announced at the event. Unlike current batteries cells, these new Tesla batteries do not feature tabs, the part of the battery which forms a connection and allows energy transfer, which is said to remove thermal problems and reduce costs significantly. As well as bringing down costs, these new batteries are said to provide five times more energy, six times more power and 16% greater driving range when compared to Tesla’s current offerings.

    Using this new battery technology in the Model S Plaid, Tesla are claiming the maximum range of the saloon to be up to 520 miles on a single charge. Combining this with three motors, the Model S plaid will also produce 1100hp, complete 0-60mph in less than 2.0 seconds and go on to a top speed of 200mph. If these figures quoted by Tesla make it to the final product, it would make the Tesla Model S Plaid the most powerful and quickest accelerating production car in the world.

    Tesla CEO Elon Musk also announced at 'Battery Day' that the company are on their way to making a $25,000 (£19,500), fully-autonomous Tesla, which should be ready "in about three years time".

    The Tesla Model S Plaid is available to pre-order in the UK now, with prices starting at £130,980.

 

  • Volkswagen has revealed the Volkswagen ID.4, an all-electric compact SUV.

    Sitting above the ID.3 hatchback in VW’s ID electric lineup, the ID.4 shares the same modular electric drive matrix (MEB) architecture as the ID.3 and offers a larger battery of up to 77 kWh.

    The ID.4 has a range of up 323 miles (WLTP) and is installed below the passenger compartment to offer a low centre of gravity. The electric drive motor, positioned at the rear axle, generates 150 kW (204 PS) and can accelerate the rear-wheel drive car from 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds, delivering a top speed of 99mph.

    The Volkswagen ID.4 is set to on sale later this year, with UK pricing yet to be confirmed. German pricing for the ID.4 First Edition starting at €49,950 (£45,330), with the higher-spec First Max version costing €59,950 (£54,430).

 

  •  In other Volkswagen news, the company has this week began taking orders of the new eighth-generation Golf GTI, in both manual and DSG formats.

    The new Golf GTI reaches 62 mph from a standstill in 6.2 seconds in its quickest, DSG-equipped form, with 245 PS and 370 Nm from its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. The model will continue on to 155 mph top speed regardless of transmission.

    Alongside the petrol hot hatch, VW are also now selling the plug-in hybrid variant, the Golf GTE. Offering the same 245 PS output, the GTE supplements a 150 PS, 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a 110 PS electric motor and 13 kWh battery pack, capable of powering the car on electric power alone for up to 32 miles. With this 245 PS, 400 Nm combination, the Golf GTE reaches a top speed of 140 mph, and gets from 0-62 mph in 6.7 seconds. As well as performance, the Golf GTE also offers 176.6 mpg on the weighted combined cycle; and 36 g/km of CO2 emissions (WLTP).

    The New Volkswagen Golf GTI starts at £33,460 for the manual version and £34,960 for the DSG. The Golf GTE starts from £35,960.

 

  • Thirty five years after the debut of the first BMW M3, BMW has this week revealed the latest generation of its high-performance models – The BMW M3 Competition Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé Competition.

    Under the bonnet of each of the new carsNew G is a 3.0-litre straight-six engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which teams up with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission as it sends its power to the rear wheels. For the first time in the history of the BMW M3 and BMW M4, customers will also be able to specify an all-wheel-drive system – expected from summer 2021 – as an alternative to traditional rear-wheel drive.

    Both cars accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds and have an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, rising to 180mph if the optional M Pro Package is specified.

    Both the BMW M3 Competition Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé Competition are available to order now, with prices starting at £74,.755 and £76,055 respectively.
